PRESS COVERAGE Subject: Daily Express 18/12/06 Rosehips: The new food to beat ageing By Paul Broster MILLIONS who suffer the aches and pains of ageing can be helped by the latest superfood: rosehips. Experts say the red berries reduce the inflammation caused by many illnesses associated with growing old. Rosehips are one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C and generations have sworn by their health-giving properties. They have been used in cooking and alternative medicine for centuries. Now research shows how rosehips can play a key health role, particularly by helping those plagued by osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. The berries’ properties may also combat heart disease and chronic bowel disorders such as Crohn’s disease. Experts in Denmark carried out a study of men and women with arthritic hips, knees or hands who took a rosehip supplement for three weeks. Eighty per cent reported a significant reduction in pain and they also cut their use of standard painkillers, including paracetamol, by 50 per cent. The study followed another by scientists in Norway which found that the mobility of osteoarthritis sufferers was boosted by 40 per cent after they took the same herbal remedy. Biochemist Dr Kaj Winther, who carried out the Danish research at Frederiksberg hospital in Copenhagen, said heart benefits were less certain but rosehips could help reduce inflammation of the arteries, cutting the chance of disease. He said: “There is emerging evidence that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in rosehips might have quite a wide therapeutic effect. The preliminary findings are very exciting.” The research is the latest in studies into so-called superfoods which are being bought by health-conscious shoppers. Popular examples include pomegranate, spinach and broccoli. Dr Winther used the supplement LitoZin, which is made from the ground-up seeds and shells of hips, or berries, from the dog rose shrub. He said the Scandinavian research was a boost in the battle against rheumatoid arthritis, a more serious condition than osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear of joints. He added: “It was more positive than I expected. “I had phone calls from patients with rheumatoid arthritis who told me it had helped them. “The pain of their sore joints was reduced, but since rheumatoid arthritis is a more serious disease it was six months before it started to work.” Rosehips have long been used as a traditional medicine in Europe, the Americas and China to treat arthritis, colds and flu, bladder stones, dry skin and premature ageing. Vikings used the high vitamin C content of rosehips to stave off scurvy on their long sea voyages. During the Second World War, Winston Churchill’s government urged people to grow rosehips as part of the effort to keep the nation healthy. The berries are often taken in syrup form or crushed down to make rosehip tea. In Sweden, rosehip soup with cream is a traditional dish and Danes enjoy rosehip marmalade. As well as vitamin C, rosehips contain vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, and K plus powerful antioxidants. Rosehips join a list of fruits and vegetables hailed as superfoods. Last month research discovered chilli pepper helps to fight cancer. Scientists hope the “hot” part, capsaicin, could be more widely used to shrink tumours of patients with pancreatic and prostate cancer. Spinach sales have risen 30 per cent in the past year after being promoted by health gurus as a rich source of vitamins A, C and E and several antioxidants. Pomegranate juice has also surged in popularity amid claims it can reduce heart disease and fight off prostate cancer. Demand for blackcurrants, blueberries and particularly blackberries has also rocketed in the past year. Farmers are even switching to the fruit from more traditional crops to keep pace with the boom. The surge in popularity follows reports suggesting blackberries can lower cholesterol and boost vitamin C levels. They are also seen as an ideal healthy snack because they are broken down slowly by the body, with energy released gradually rather than in a sugar “rush”. Blackberry sales are up 121 per cent in the past year, with the market now worth £11million.
